A mum-of-two who was quoted £8,000 for her dream kitchen makeover managed to take on the renovation herself for just £350 - saving her thousands.

Stephanie McCormick, 33, was told updating her old-fashioned kitchen would cost a fortune and she simply couldn't afford the hefty price tag. But she was still desperate to freshen things up so she decided to see if she could pull the makeover off herself and do some DIY.

She bought the three-bed bungalow with her partner last October and said it needed a spruce, but otherwise was in good working order. Stephanie was keen to keep the kitchen renovation on a budget and used high street options from shops including The Range and Dunelm to achieve the perfect look.

It took her just two weeks to transform the kitchen into a modern and beautiful space which features copper details, geometric shapes and sleek charcoal grey cupboards - a far cry from the drab white and wood counters that she had before.

Stephanie, who is a complex needs assistant, achieved the look by sanding down and painting 23 cupboard doors. She also scrubbed her floor tiles and painted the walls. She added finishing touches such as bright copper utensils over the hob and trailing plants around the room.

The mum said: “The house was in good order, and it had been well maintained by the previous owners. But we wanted to put our own stamp on it. It hadn’t been updated since it was built 15 years ago and was of the older generation, so it needed dragged into this year and given a bit of a spruce.

“I have always been a keen crafter and pretty creative so I thought I could give it a go myself. There was no way we could have afford £8,000 for a new kitchen, we just didn’t have that sort of money lying around. I wanted to go for an industrial chic look with a warehouse feel, which is why we went for the copper – that was the inspiration. I took all 23 doors off in the kitchen and numbered them so we knew exactly where they would fit back.

“I scrubbed all the old grease and marks off them and then sanded everything down before I started painting. I used Frenchic Paint which was lovely to work with. I applied it with a brush rather than a roller - it doesn’t need any finishes and it’s waterproof. The paint has held so well, I thought I would have to be touching it up all the time but I haven’t.

“I got the accessories from Dunelm, Ikea, The Range and Studio. I painted the geometric planters the same colour to fit in with the units.”

The results are fabulous and it inspired Stephanie to use her DIY skills elsewhere and she then moved on to her bathroom. She gave the bathroom a makeover in just four days for less than £400. She got a new floor for £160 and bought accessories from Matalan and Etsy to finish off the space.

And she's not for stopping, and now plans to have a go at her hallway, which she hopes to panel. She said: “I got inspired to do our bathroom after seeing how well the kitchen turned out.

“There was nothing wrong with the suite and I didn’t see any sense in spending money on a new one and putting perfectly good stuff to landfill. We did it in four days over a long weekend, and the whole room cost less than £400. The floors were changed to a textile backed vinyl which only cost £160 to buy and fit. I got some new units from Argos and used paint from Dunelm which was only £13 for 2.5l tub – it was amazing and gave great coverage.

“I hung shelves from Matalan that I got in the sale and some wall art from Etsy. The matt black finishes, like the toilet roll holder and the towel rail, were from B&Q. I tried to embrace the dark moodiness of the room. It has inspired me to do the rest of the house, seeing how well those two rooms have turned out really spurred me on. I am hoping to do the hallway next with some panelling.”
