Dyson V15 Detect review: Portable, powerful and a versatile vacuum cleaner - Technology News

Dyson launched the V15 Detect vacuum cleaner as its new premium cleaning machine for Indian customers. A bit late to the Indian market, the Dyson V15 Detect is a more powerful version of the Dyson V12 Detect Slim, which was launched earlier this year in India. A more powerful version means that the V15 packs in a more powerful motor while ensuring efficient cleaning. There are a couple of more things that are new to the Dyson V15 Detect compared to the V12 Detect Slim.

Starting with the obvious, the more powerful motor. Dyson has packed its most powerful 240AW motor in the V15 Detect. The machine does not always use the motor at its full capacity all the time but rather switches between the three modes - Eco, Auto and Boost - depending on the dust particles that the machine detects.

How does the Dyson V15 vacuum cleaner detect the amount of dust on the floor? You might wonder. Like the V12, the V15 Detect has a piezo sensor that continuously sizes and counts dust particles. In case you wish to identify the size of dust particles in your house (why would you?), the LCD screen at the top of the machine shows you the data in real-time. There are four bars for the different size ranges of dust particles(>10, >60, >180 microns and >500 microns). On top of each bar, the machine also shows the number of dust particles captured of each size. This might amaze you initially, but I did not bother checking the stats after a few rounds of cleaning.

The machine, depending on the cleaner head that you attach, will weigh between 2.5-3 kgs. However, due to this excellent weight distribution, the Dyson V15 Detect does not feel as heavy.

I have one complaint though. After using the V12 for quite some time, I find the gun trigger button on the V15 slightly inconvenient. There were times when I accidentally turned on the motor while simply holding the machine. The red button on the Dyson V12’s barrel is certainly a better one-click solution to switch the machine on or off.

Coming to the second highlight feature of the Dyson V15 Detect, its Anti-Tangle cleaner head. This tool has hair removal vanes that are precisely angled to help migrate all hair types directly into the bin. Its functionality is similar to the cone-shaped Hair screw tool but the Anti-tangle cleaner head is bigger in size, thus covering more area with a single sweep, Also, the cleaner head features support for Dyson’s Dynamic Load Sensor (DLS) technology, which monitors the brush bar resistance 360 times a second and automatically adjusts the motor’s speed between carpets and hard floors. If you have a dog or any other pet at your place, this particular tool will definitely be your best mechanical pal.

You also get a bunch of other tools, such as the laser slim fluffy cleaner head, which has nylon and anti-static carbon fibre bristles to pick up dust on hard floors. The right corner of the cleaner head has laser LEDs which emit a green light for cleaning in darker areas of the house. This tool is also provided with the Dyson V12 Detect Slim. There is also a standard soft roller that covers slightly more ground. Like some older Dyson vacuum cleaners, the V15 Detect also comes with a soft dusting brush, a dirt brush, a crevice tool and a two-in-one combination tool.

All these attachments can be attached to a wand provided with the machine or directly to the motor barrel. Between the powerful motor and the attachments is a transparent bin. Because the Dyson V15 Detect is larger in size, it also carries a larger 0.54L transparent bin. This is over 50 per cent larger than the V12 Detect Slim’s 0.35L bin.

Dyson did not have a definite answer to the overall battery life that one can expect from the V15. However, the average time that the machine showed at 100 per cent charge was 60 minutes. This is primarily when you use the machine in Eco mode. I preferred using the Dyson V15 Detect in Auto mode as the machine automatically adjusted the suction power depending on the amount of dust on the surface.

I only switched to Boost mode for maximum suction while cleaning the sliding window rails or some tight corners of the sofa or bed. On average, one can expect the machine to last for about 50-60 minutes on a single charge when in Auto mode. In Boost mode, expect the battery to last for about 20 minutes tops.

In case you are conscious about battery life, the Dyson V15’s battery can be swapped with another one. You will need to purchase a new battery separately. Each battery takes about four hours and 30 minutes to charge fully.

If you have come this far in our Dyson V15 Detect review, you already know that the vacuum cleaner is an excellent cleaning machine. With a 240AW powerful motor along with cleaner heads and tools that have been smartly designed for various types of surfaces, the Dyson V15 Detect certainly gets high points from us. All that modern hardware packed inside a relatively slim machine comes at a cost - Rs 62,900. Yes, it is certainly very expensive, but if you can afford one, the Dyson V15 is unlikely to disappoint.

The Dyson V15 Detect is a few thousand rupees more expensive than the V12 Detect Slim. The latter has a comparatively-less powerful motor (150AW), a smaller bin and a battery pack. It also does not come with an Anti-Tangle tool but comes with all other tools and cleaner heads packed with the Dyson V15 Detect. The V12 Detect Slim gets all other features found in the V15. An upside for the V12 Detect Slim is its relatively lightweight design and that one-click button to start or stop the machine. We wish the V15 Detect’s India variant came with the same power switch mechanism.

If you own a V12 Detect Slim, it does not make much sense to upgrade to the V15 Detect unless you want that powerful motor, bigger bin, better battery life and a new anti-tangle cleaner head. Dyson V8, Dyson Omni-glide or and even Dyson V10 users, for that matter, can consider upgrading to the new Dyson V15 for the multiple upgrades that it brings with it to the table.
