The animated Transformers TV series was created in the 1980s to sell the Transformers toys to kids.

Forty years later, it seems that the blockbuster Michael Bay film adaptation of the series has achieved the same thing—except this time, the toys actually transform.

Spotted in the wild at CES 2023 by computer company Newegg, the Optimus Prime flagship robot is the stuff of sci-fi. It uses a range of microchips, motors, and robotics to change seamlessly between the Autobot character and a lorry.

Officially licensed by toy company Hasbro, Optimus comes fitted with remote control via an app, so you can transform, walk, and steer it using your smartphone.

These actions come fitted with 80+ sound effects and 'transforming' sounds spoken by the original voice actor of Optimus Prime, Peter Cullen—making it an authentic robot in disguise.

You can programme the robot with its own custom movements, and can even use voice control to command the auto-converting Optimus toy, allowing you to talk to the robot as if it were a real friend.

The hi-tech toy doesn't come cheap though, and costs about what you would expect an actual Transformer to cost.

Selfridges currently sells the Autobot for £1199 or you can get it from the official Robosen Store for £999, making it one seriously pricey birthday present.

Fans of the series have reacted to the robotic toy with awe. Twitter user Angel Fundora said: "Having these toys as a kid would have been amazing lol. All we had to move them back then was our imagination."
